The popular Dodge Dakota pickup is making a huge comeback. The upcoming 2020 Dodge Dakota will arrive with an impressive styling, modern look, and great performances. However, this model will most likely arrive under the Ram’s badge. So, don’t be surprised if we see Ram Dakota instead of the Dodge Dakota. Most of the pickup’s details are not yet available. However, some things are already confirmed. For the start, this model will ride on the same platform that underpins Jeep Wrangler.
Whatsoever, Dakota is based on the new Wrangler SUV. On top of that, both models are produced in the same plant. Dakota will arrive as the mid-size model. That means this pickup will compete in probably the strongest segment in the pickup world.
2020 Dodge Dakota Rides On the Wrangler’s Platform
The all-new 2020 Dodge Dakota will look very upscale and modern. Styling is impressive and new Dakota will be based on the Jeep Wrangler. That includes plenty of Wrangler’s cues but most importantly, Wrangler’s platform. And while we don’t know the exact vehicle dimensions, new Dakota will be a mid-size pickup.
On the other hand, Dakota could arrive under the Ram’s badge. For that reason, some features and styling cues are borrowed from the Ram 1500 model. That includes the all-new grille with large RAM lettering in the front. Crosshair grille is not available anymore in the company’s models. 18-inch wheels will be offered as standard. However, we are still waiting for full details.
Interior details are also not available. However, new 2020 Dodge Dakota will surely borrow a lot from Wrangler SUV and Ram 1500 pickup truck. Knowing that it is hard to predict the exact interior look. New Dakota won’t look unique at all. But it will look very upscale and stylish. Dakota will most likely offer Wrangler’s dashboard and displays.
On the other hand, upholstery, gear shifter and steering wheel are clearly Ram’s. New mid-size pickup will arrive with a great level of comfort. Thanks to the numerous trim levels, this pickup can be equipped to a high level of luxury. On the other hand, the base model will provide just enough. Leather upholstery, larger displays, and numerous packages will be optional.
2020 Dodge Dakota Powertrain
Since the FCA is producing the model, one thing is certain. A 3.6-liter V6 is the most logical choice. This engine powers all of the new Jeep’s models. The 2020 Dodge Dakota will be no different. On top of that, this engine powers the Wrangler SUV. Dakota rides on the same platform as Wrangler so you do the math. It isn’t official yet, but act like it is.
Powerful V6 produces 285 horsepower. On the other hand, Dakota will surely get at least one optional engine. Latest reports are speculating a 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine. This powertrain cranks out over 250 horses and over 300 lb-ft of torque. So far, 8-speed automatic transmission is the only gearbox choice. A 4WD drive will be optional. We are still waiting for the engine specs, which includes tow rating, fuel economy, top speed, and acceleration.
Arrival and Cost
First speculations suggested a huge comeback in 2022. Now, it looks like the comeback of 2020 Dodge Dakota will happen much earlier. This pickup will go on sale in the last quarter of 2019 or in the first quarter of 2020. It is yet unknown if the Dakota will arrive under the Ram’s or Dodge’s badge. Dakota will compete in the mid-size pickup segment.
It is the most packed segments in terms of options and established models. Ford Ranger, Chevy Colorado, Mitsubishi Triton, and Toyota Tacoma are the most probable competitors. New 2020 Dakota will start at mid- $20,000 range.
The 3.6 liter Pentastar engine is rated on or about 300-305 horsepower, 270 lb.-ft. of torque and that’s still inadequate. The 4.7 L V-8 always appeared woefully under-powered in the Dodge Dakota. A truck, even a mid-size truck must be able to carry the load under today’s driving conditions. The 2021 Dodge Dakota should be available with a proper suspension and a 5.7L option to be competitive in today’s market.
