2021 Toyota Hilux Mako Is Seriously Targeting the Ford Ranger Raptor Pickup

The famous Japanese automaker recently introduces a new model called the 2021 Toyota Hilux Mako. This 4×4 off-road pickup is based on the Hilux model and is aimed to rival Ford Ranger Raptor directly. As you probably know, Hilux is a very popular midsize pickup truck and is one of the best selling in the Toyota lineup.

However, thanks to the new Mako package, the Hilux receives a great off-road capability thanks to the new suspension lift and premium ARB Old Man Emu BP-51 shocks.

The new Mako package will make Hilux more recognized. Basically, the design is boosted, and visual changes include a unique steel bumper, LED light bar, the new fog lamps. Unlike the regular model, Mako also gains specific fender flares, steps with the Mako logo, lift/close assist for the tailgate, and a deck liner as standard.

Alongside all features mentioned above, for better off-roading ability, Toyota lifted Mako’s suspension and added ARB Old Man Emu BP-51 shocks. On top of that, all Terrain tires 265/60 R18 are used and rides on the new 18-inch Black Rhino rims. Braking is also better adding larger front discs along with stainless steel braided brake lines.

Interior Features More Sporty Styling

The interior of the newest 2021 Toyota Hilux Mako is seriously targeting the Ford Ranger Raptor pickup truck model. Moreover, unlike the regular model, the Mako package will take Hilux to the next level.

First of all, the layout remains the same, and Toyota added more comfortable race-inspired front seats with Mako emblems. Besides that, more luxury is present, and we like the new special designed thick rim leather steering wheel with the “12 o’clock” marker. As you can see, the cabin is stylish, and we cannot wait to see the Mako model side by side Ford Ranger Raptor.

2021 Toyota Hilux Mako Powertrain Specs

The latest 2021 Toyota Hilux Mako will use the same engine as the regular model. This truck comes with a 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel that delivers 150 kW and 500 Nm or (201 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque). The manufacturer also used the same six-speed automatic transmission that is very reliable, and it provides smooth shifting. Just for comparison, the popular Ford Ranger comes with a 3.2-liter engine that delivers 147kW/470Nm or 2.0-litre twin-turbo four-cylinder diesel engine that makes 157kW/500Nm.

On top of that, all Hilux variants boast an increased towing capacity of 3500kg, which is 7700 pounds. Also, The maximum payload of this truck is 2,068 lbs.

Release Date and Price

As we stated, Toyota recently introduced a 4×4 off-road pickup truck package called Mako. The new package gears up Hilux on a higher level. Besides suspension lift and premium ARB Old Man Emu BP-51 shocks, Mako also features more aggressive front fascia and a giant skid plate.

Weirdly, this off-road edition will be only available for the New Zealand market later this year. According to Toyota, there will be only 250 copies available. Also, the manufacturer confirmed that Hilux Mako would cost around $79,900. For comparison, the Hilux main rival Ford Ranger Raptor in New Zeland starts at $84,990.
