One year ago, VW announced a concept of a pickup truck that will reach American soil. It is a 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak a pickup based on the Atlas SUV. Tanoak is the name of the concept so this pickup will surely borrow cues from both the SUV version and its original concept. On the other hand, many experts are skeptical about this model. Whatsoever, this model is still not official.
Surely, VW Atlas Tanoak will represent a real refreshment in the pickup truck segment. It will be a great addition to the company’s lineup as well. However, the production model will depart from the Tanoak concept. Moreover, this model will offer both gasoline and diesel engines.
2021 Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak Comes With Stylish Exterior Design
Don’t expect anything revolutionary in terms of exterior design. New 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak will mix designs of the Atlas SUV and the Tanoak concept. Still, the German manufacturer will deliver a unique look with a modern appearance. Interestingly, but Atlas Tanoak won’t ride on the body-on-frame architecture. Instead, this pickup will deploy a unibody construction. For that reason, you can already start with comparing Tanoak and Honda Ridgeline models.
According to numerous reports, the new Atlas SUV will gain further upgrades. The same upgrades will be visible on the new pickup truck as well. However, don’t expect futuristic details or anything similar. The concept shows an 11-inch longer wheelbase than the SUV’s one.
Innovative Features Inside
The upcoming 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak will feature a simple yet modern cabin. The interior will provide a high level of comfort and plenty of standard equipment. The cabin will be spacious, in line with the Honda Ridgeline. For that reason, you can expect plenty of legroom in both rows. We still don’t know which cab configurations will be in the offer.
The dashboard is taken from the Atlas SUV model, along with a couple of more amenities. However, cabin design and shapes are borrowed from the original concept. Although the cabin looks really nice, real luxury starts at higher trim levels. The base model is pretty, well, “basic.” Still, VW will deliver a long list of features and new driver-assistance aids.
The engine specs are quite a mystery at the moment. Logically, the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak will borrow the engine from its SUV sibling. A 3.6-liter V6 with 275 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque is the most likely choice. If this really happens, Tanoak will be on par with rivals such as Chevy Colorado, Ford Ranger or Toyota Tacoma.
However, potent V6 will be an optional engine. A standard powertrain should be a 2.0-liter turbo-four that generates 235 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of twisting power. Diesel is a possibility, but it won’t become available in the U.S. Many automakers plan to do exactly the same thing. However, Chevy Colorado is the only model with a diesel powertrain.
2021 Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak Price and Release Date
Once it arrives, brand-new 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak will cost around $30,000. The German manufacturer is yet to release exact pricing details and trim levels. If everything goes according to plan, this pickup truck will go on sale by the end of 2020.
